From the creators of Byron’s late-night institution, Woody’s Surf Shack, comes Saltwater Social Club, a relaxed restaurant by day and lively bar by night.
Uniquely positioned at 32 Jonson Street in the heart of Byron Bay, Saltwater Social Club pays homage to Byron’s coastal culture and storied history while incorporating saltwater stories from across the seas.
With a complete refit led by creative director, Caitlin Cady, the newly renovated space strikes a balance between laid back vintage vibes and classic coastal style for an eclectic feel.
White washed walls, sun-bleached floors, and navy cabinetry create a bright and airy seaside ambience, accented with nods to the nautical, such as brass hardware, maritime treasures and patterned encaustic cement tiles and rope sconces created by Sibella Court.
Valuing sustainability, Saltwater Social Club has been renovated and designed using as many used materials and vintage or up-cycled furniture and artwork as possible. SSC has also made the commitment to be a single-use plastic free venue.
The collection of curated vintage and new artwork, including pieces by Bundjalung artist Holly Sanders, local Byron painter Pat Oates, as well as circa 1960s black and white photos of Byron Bay by Bob Weeks, Dick Hoole and John Pennings, mix with art and artefacts from Hawaii, New Zealand, North America and even further afield, telling the story of Byron Bay’s coastal culture – and reminding us that the sea connects us all.
Saltwater Social Club is designed to be a gathering place for all. Lazy weekend lunches with sandy feet, rowdy dinners with family and friends, and late night drinks to the sounds of live DJs are the standard. With cozy upholstered booths, plenty of bar seating and tables for up to 10 people, you’re sure to find a favourite spot for an early dinner with the kids, a casual date night for two, or a big night out with friends.
Families coming in for a weekend lunch or early dinner will find Saltwater Social Club set up with minis in mind. From a dedicated kids menu and activity sheets and crayons to high chairs and a change table, families are welcomed with all the amenities they need to enjoy a lunch or dinner out with the groms in tow.
The venue’s eclectic interior design, iconic location, and warm, welcoming vibe are complemented by Saltwater Social Club’s menu of shareable snacks, salads and hand-stretched sourdough pizzas as well as kombucha, beers on tap, organic wines and hand-crafted cocktails.
This month sees the upstairs lounge open, which features a second bar, lounge seating, fireplace and pool table, as well as the iconic outdoor balcony looking over Jonson Street.
Open from 4pm until late Monday through Thursday for sundowners, dinner, and late-night drinks. Over Summer, Saltwater Social Club will also open from 12pm for lunch to late-night on Friday, Saturday and Sundays. Live DJs will be spinning classic tunes and high vibes every weekend.
