That’s One Good Sort of Truck

Watch out for the new Byron Shire waste and recycling trucks as they hit the streets on Monday 3 August.

Previewed by Byron Shire Councillors, the six new trucks are urging everyone to ‘Be a good sort” and are part of the new green organics waste bin service.

Mayor Simon Richardson, with a tongue in cheek, said that Byron Shire was known for its ‘good sorts’. “They’re everywhere. And now we have the truck to prove it!”

“Whilst fun in its tone, the ‘Be a good sort’ is a strong educational message that sorting our waste matters.

“Our new green bins are being delivered and this is resident’s opportunity to get our waste sorted into the right bin so we can return the organic waste back to the soil,” he said.

The green bin drop started in Suffolk Park, followed by Byron Bay, Brunswick Heads, New Brighton, Ocean Shores, South Golden Beach, Mullumbimby and Bangalow.

As part of the new service, Council is also supplying a kitchen bench top caddy for food scraps, a six-month supply of compostable caddy liners and educational information.

Residents are urged to bring the new green bin as soon as it arrives, and read up on the information pack provided.

“The pack contains a new waste calendar for what days the bins go out, plus has new stickers to place on the front of the bins to help with sorting waste.

The new service is anticipated to divert over 3,000 tonnes of organic waste from landfill each year, instead being processed into certified organic compost which can be returned to the soils on local farms and gardens.

The new weekly service, which is for all food and garden waste, begins on Monday 3 August.

Both red landfill and yellow recycling bins will be collected fortnightly on alternate weeks when the new service starts. Check your new calendar in the info pack when the new green bin is delivered.

This project was supported by the Environmental Trust as part of the NSW EPA’s Waste Less, Recycle More initiative, funded from the Waste Levy.
