In conjunction with the Byron Writers Festival, Retrospect Galleries is proud to present Let’s Go To Sleep, an exhibition of local artist, Michelle Dawson’s original illustrations for the 2013 children’s book release; Let’s Go To Sleep, written by award winning children’s book author Margaret Wild.
This is Michelle’s second foray into children’s picture book illustration, her first, how Weird is that…was a collaboration with singer/songwriter Gyan and garnered her a shortlisting for the prestigious Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Crichton Award for Best New Illustrator.
As a professional artist Michelle’s work invariably involves animals so it was little wonder Working Title Press approached her with this project; a children’s book intended to lull children to sleep by evoking a different animal heading into slumber on each page.
Michelle has said of her work for this project, I have strived with each drawing to evoke the scenes and settings suggested by Margaret’s exquisitely distilled sentences and with the depiction of the animals to express a sense of tender nurturing, love and safety that the children can take with them as they drift towards sleep.
This is a mission she has achieved admirably with her exquisitely delicate illustrations which feature tenderly rendered animals from all over the world, all depicted in their natural habitats, heading into sleep.
Margaret Wild comments, the idea for Let’s Go to Sleep started with an image of an iceberg dazzling in the dark.
This book is a bit of a departure for me in that there is no actual storyline, but I feel the repeated phrase “let’s go to sleep” gives it a structure that hold its together and creates
a calm, gentle mood. Michelle Dawson’s pictures of the various animals are warm and endearing and gorgeously sleepy – just right for bedtime!
The Magpie Newsletter heralding this new release has said of Michelle’s artwork, subdued colours reflect the mood: the careful watercolour, ink and pencil images are to be cooed over, these nestling creatures each vying to become favourites: the flopsy bunnies, long limbed grace of the camels or the vertically sleeping penguin chick.
Don’t miss this opportunity to experience these beautiful original illustrations.
