Woodford Folk Festival in partnership with Caloundra Music Festival and Mullum Music Festival presents THE FESTIVAL OF SMALL HALLS QUEENSLAND SPRING TOUR, featuring Andy Brown, The Mae Trio and special guests Starboard Cannons…

1274266_601334523252479_1607683101_oCanadian folk-pop musician Andy Brown will return to Australia for the 4th time in two years especially to take part in the Festival of Small Halls Queensland Spring Tour.

‘I am so excited to be performing as part of the Festival of Small Halls tour. Playing intimate venues is what I love to do most. I find that the words and meaning of a song are somehow more honest, and more deeply felt in the ‘pin-drop’ settings that the Festival of Small Halls tour is chock full of.’ says Andy.

Having wooed audiences at the Woodford Folk Festival in 2012/2013, Andy returned in the same year as direct support for Australian Idol Winner Damien Leith’s national album release tour. Brown also penned two of the tracks featured on Leith’s new album.

“The buzz surrounding Brown, a three-time International Songwriting
Competition finalist, is justified.”

Queensland Spring Tour partners Caloundra Music Festival (QLD) and Mullum Music Festival are the bookends for a 21-date adventure through regional and remote Queensland, and a few quick scurries into Northern New South Wales.

Modeled on a traditional Australian hall experience, the tour concentrates on visiting towns where communities are strong, but may not have access to high quality musical acts due to their remote locations, or lack of a suitable venue. Artists playing the Festival of Small Halls are chosen not only for the high caliber of their music, but for their enthusiasm and willingness to become part of the community for the brief time that they pass through – a perfect fit for the country halls that populate Australian towns.

Australian artists The Mae Trio are also looking forward to this first foray into Queensland’s West.

A perfect example of the level of quality patrons can expect from artists on the tour, The Mae Trio won the Australian Folk Alliance’s Youth Folk Awards in 2013, then released their debut album, Housewarming, in August of the same year. In the brief time that has followed, they’ve been booked for every major folk festival in Australia, as well as being courted by the UK’s top events and festivals, including a recent appearance at the Glasgow Royal Concert Hall for the Commonwealth Games Celebrations. No strangers to touring, sisters Elsie and Maggie Rigby and childhood friend Anita Hillman had toured in family bands and their own outfits prior to the sudden success of The Mae Trio.

Needing no introduction – Mullum’s own Starboard Cannons will also join Andy Brown on selected dates of the tour…

“Poised, intelligent, genuine… hell, they might even single-handedly extinguish the cultural cringe about Australian folk.”
