Bangalow Catholic Hall, Friday 25th March
This will be a very moving & beautiful performance…and a rare chance to see two of India’s finest classical musicians!!
Debapriya is a disciple of the legendary Padmabhusan Girija Devi of Benaras Gharana. His mother first introduced the notes S R G M P D N to him when he was a young child and ever since then Debapriya has been singing. He was first initiated into Classical music by his extremely supportive parents – he received his primary lessons from his mother, who later took him to the stalwart vocalist of ‘Senia Gharana’, Pt. Samaresh Chawdhury from whom he learnt off for fifteen years. The one man whom Debapriya recognizes as his main Preceptor, who actually changed his entire approach for music is the late exponent of Agra Atrauli Gharana, Pt. Kumar Prasad Mukhopadhyay.
Samanwaya, is also a disciple of the legendary Padmabhusan Girija Devi of Benaras Gharan. His mother first gave him a sitar when he was a young boy and he was taken to a stalwart of ‘Senia Gharana’ Pt, Sasanka Bandopadhyay at the age of four.
Debapriya and Samanwaya are accomplished in many areas of Indian classical music, including pure classical, tappa, tap-khyal, thumri, dadra, chaiti, holi, kajri, jhula, under able guidance of their Gurumaa (Mentor) Dr.Girija Devi. They have performed solos and duet at several national and International Music Festivals.
The couple improvise complementing each others style and presentation. They experiment with new approaches whilst preserving the tradition of ‘Ragas and Talas’.
Their musical ventures are a complete reflection of Indian Classical music…
