Blak Matriarchy is a series of paintings that honour and celebrate the ways of knowing, being and doing of our doobai (Aboriginal Women), the ones who care for Country and community and continue culture. The ones with strength, resilience, humour and beauty. The ones with the survival genes and the large earrings. The ones who keep caring when things get tougher.
In our culture we have men’s business and women’s business, as a woman I wanted to acknowledge the role of Aboriginal women in our local community. Colonisation has not ended the practices of men and women’s business and not everyone knows this. I wanted to share what I could within our cultural protocols to help people to understand this about our culture. BB
