Laurie Anderson sang ‘Paradise is exactly like where you are right now, only much, much better.’ She could have been describing the Mullum Music Festival, four days of international and national profile artists mixing with locals and visitors in the beautiful and vibrant little town of Mullumbimby on the NSW north coast.
Four years ago a seed was planted in the hearts of music lovers and in the streets of their town, now Mullum Music Festival (24-27 November) bears fruit with a quality festival that strikes just the right balance of popular acts with yet-to-be-discovered surprises. It’s all about ‘Big Music in a Small Town’ when the festival lights up the pubs, halls, cafes and clubs of Mullumbimby.
Local resident and Festival Director Glenn Wright believes that to create a sustainable festival, you have to make it a sustainable size. ‘It’s about using the amazingly diverse venues that already exist in Mullumbimby’ he says ‘Sometimes the most wonderful places are right under your nose and the most creative thing to do is to leave things as they are.”
Even though 3 days of the 4 day festival sold out last year, the Festival is committed to creating a unique, intimate event and has thus capped the numbers, keeping the festival at it’s current size. The Mullum Music Festival is a much-anticipated event for locals with many visitors now catching on and making an annual holiday to the region at festival time. This year’s Early Bird ticket allocation sold out in 2 weeks.
“Its all about music and community,” says Festival Director Glenn Wright “We try and program interesting and diverse independent artists that are doing original work. There’s a strong NZ contingent this year as well as some amazing soul with The Dynamites with Charles Walker (USA) & Bamboos (Melbourne), world class reggae with Jamaican living legends The Congos & Stranger Cole, roots acts like Little Bushman (NZ) and folk act Ray Bonneville (Austin Texas). The artists mix with the punters to check out the music, there’s no VIP area, there’s a great sense of camaraderie and community at the festival.”
Mullum music Festival will continue the initiatives it kicked off last year with a Youth Mentorship, Tree

Pete Murray is back with his first Australian tour in over two years to support the release of his brand spanking new album ‘Blue Sky Blue’.
Don’t miss out on this special opportunity to see one of the Northern Rivers and Australia’s best talents in a unique and intimate setting! “The Free Tour” will feature Pete’s hits, some new songs, a new band and sees him returning to the venues where many of his loyal fans experienced his early dynamic live shows.
The highly anticipated album “Blue Sky Blue” features the first single from the album “Always A Winner” which embraces his exciting new sound, inspired by new chapters in his personal life. Hitting top 5 in the airplay charts immediately around Australia, the single reflects a conscious change in the recording approach with a new team of musicians and working with U.S. producer Tom Rothrock (Beck, Foo Fighters, Elliott Smith).
“The Free Tour” takes its name from the new single, “Free”, a song about breaking loose from the shackles and a perfect title for a tour that comes after such a long break from Australian gigging. “I’m really looking forward to finally getting back out on the road and playing these shows”, explains Pete.
“The new album took longer to write and record than anything I’ve done since “Feeler” so I’m really looking forward to playing some of these songs to people. Plus it’s time to continue my quest to try to find the perfect truck stop burger!”
Pete recently returned home after a massive sold out tour of Brazil where he made the beautiful video for “Free”. “There was something about the liberating energy of that country which felt like a great fit for this song”, explains Murray. “Blue Sky Blue” is Pete Murray’s fourth studio album; his three previous releases having sold over a million copies in Australia and the listeners of Triple J recently voted his classic “Feeler” in the top 100 Aussie albums of all time.

As most people now know – Australian school leavers take a holiday with friends as soon at their end of school exams finish. This is known as Schoolies Week.
The actual dates depend on the State they attended school in and the subjects being tested. Safe to say end of November / early December are Schoolies Weeks.
Byron Bay is a popular Schoolie destination along with the Gold Coast, Noosa, Bali & Fiji.
If you are a school leaver in 2012 and looking for Schoolie Accommodation in Byron Bay, visit;

Sunday, October 23 at Wategos Beach, 8.00 am (Board registrations at 7am)
Question. What is noisier than the ruckus caused by a fox in a chicken coop? That’s easy. A bunch of surfers talking about surfboard designs. Gather a bunch of surfers together, throw in a whole lot of different surfboards and suddenly the decibel level jumps. Mysterious sounding topics such as plan shape, rocker, fin systems, channels, concaves, rails and tail designs are discussed as surfboards are stroked, observed from all angles, poked, pushed and prodded.
The organisers of the Byron Bay Surf Festival are giving surfers the opportunity to feed their obsession for surfboard design and ownership with their unique “Swap Meet” event to be staged on Sunday, October 23 at Wategos Beach as part of their three day festival. While a swag of the region’s best board shapers and designers have been invited to bring along a selection of their newest boards (and board shaping ideas) to display, local surfers are also invited to bring along surfboards (new or old) that they might wish to swap or sell. Hopefully oodles of surfboards of all shapes, sizes, ages and designs will fill the grassy spaces behind the beach to provide local surfers with hours of inspecting, discussing, buying or swapping opportunities. That’s right. Money does not even have to change hands! Surfers may simply trade one board for another if they want to transform their surfing experience and something exotic takes their fancy.
Surfers and surfboard collectors must not miss this opportunity to find a bargain, extend their quiver or simply learn a lot about how and why board designs work or don’t work by discussing surfboards with experts and innovators. Attendance at the “Swap Meet” is absolutely free. If you wish to bring a board along to display, swap or sell a small registration fee of $5.00 per board applies. Hosted by Byron bay Malibu Club and the Byron Bay Surf Festival, the fun starts at 8.00 am (Board registrations at 7am) at Wategos and will continue until around midday.
Some exciting board shapers and designers attending will be Tom Wegener, Sage and Paul Joske (Valla Boards), Simon Jones (Morning of the Earth and MP Boards), Thomas Bexon (Thomas Boards) and Gary Burden (Troll and Astro Boards).
The surf swap meet is all part of the weekend of Surf Culture Now in Byron Bay Oct 21-23rd. Check out the website to see the full program of surf inspired and mostly free events!
