Two of the hottest Brisbane bands are coming to Durrumbul Hall for a Saturday night summer’s celebration of PULSE, grooves, and seriously dancey sounds.
Hailing from Brisbane’s West End, KOOii’s dynamic and original live show defines easy categorization. There’s an evident affinity with reggae, afrobeat, and funk music. Backed by a 5-piece rhythm section (including members of OKA and SPANKINHIDE), horns and 3-part vocal harmonies, the live show is a must see, must dance experience. KOOii’s founder and frontman is Peter Hunt, is a soulful singer, songwriter, trumpeter and star on the rise.
SPANKINHIDE is Queensland’s most dynamic and powerful African rhythm and dance ensemble. Performing traditional rhythms and dances from West Africa along side ‘New Ancient beats’ from Zimbabwe and the Congo, they deliver dazzling live shows of precision, exotically costumed choreography, and riveting, syncopated, pulsating rhythms. SPANKINHIDE will debut a new piece, titled the Banakuma 2010. ‘Banakuma’ describes a group of sacred rhythms and dances that take the dancer on a journey through the four elements earth, water, fire and air. From its slow, grounded, easy-going first rhythm Dimbe, it swims its way through the watery N’Yanza, over the fiery inferno Bachelle, to combust into the airy expanse of Boyobe.
